Stay on the Dutch side or French side?
Dutch Side (Sint Maarten)
St. Maarten | With years of mostly American tourists (75%), the Dutch side of Sint Maarten became the Las Vegas of the Caribbean, with restaurants, marinas, casinos, and nightlife all around.
The Dutch side is also famous for its Tax-Free importing and shopping for luxury brands, such as European watches, jewelry, and clothing, which saves you 15 to 20%. On a $ 20.000 timepiece, this can be immense.
Also, alcohol, cigarettes, pharma-products, and cigars are incredibly affordable, and only your savings can make back the trip!
Not for nothing, SXM is known as a Sin-Island where you get to leave all your worries behind.
Philipsburg
The capital Philipsburg became great for your day-trips and a real hub for cruise-ships.
With lots of historical sights combined with unique street art, the streets tell you stories. Front street is fantastic for shopping, and on the boardwalk along Great Bay, there are bars, restaurants, watersports, and beach chairs for you to soak up some sun. Enjoy a traditional Caribbean vacation mixed with modern times. Find European luxury brands in front street, and all tax-free such as “Hublot”, “Zenith”, “Patek Phillipe”, “Rolex”, “Messika”, “Salvatore Ferragamo”, and lots more.
You can also lounge away at night in, for example, Ocean Lounge, Nouvelle Vague or have a drink at the many beach bars. Read more about Philipsburg and the Boardwalk…

If you like a quiet stay closer to calm beaches such as Orient Bay, Le Galion, and the French side, but you enjoy the Dutch-side advantages, staying in this area is a good pick.
You can expect a lot more wind on this area of the Island, making it the best side for windsurfing or kitesurfing.
Dutch Side: Overall travel advice
If you are looking for a vacation to relax on the beach, enjoy sublime restaurants, combined with nightlife, casinos, and parties. All while enjoying affordable alcohol, meeting like-minded people, and the locals. Then the Dutch side would be your best option!
In short:

St. Martin | kept its European charm with no high structures, no casinos, and almost no fast-food. Not for nothing, it is known as the “Culinary Capital of the Caribbean” as the fine-cuisine and gastronomic know-how is merely fantastic!
When you’re on the French side, it feels like visiting Europe, with modern style European clothing, french delicacies, a perfumery, small coffee corners, and great restaurants. Try the original French croissants, cheeses, marmalades, and patés. But most exceptional is that everything is small and personal!
The difference between the two sides of the Island is immense. That’s why on SXM, you’ll get to enjoy the best of 2 wolds!
Marigot
The capital Marigot has some excellent marinas for smaller yachts and sailboats. It is known for European shopping, great restaurants, and its historical sights.
Hurricane Irma brought a lot of damage in 2017, but fantastic street art from Jimmy Sheik and Mashinart covered areas with love and color.
Pic Paradis
A little outside Marigot, there’s Pic Paradis, the highest point of SXM, and its lush jungle surrounding. Escape in our unique tropical forest system with wild iguanas, monkeys, and lots of birds.
