Taxi’s | Cabs in SXM (no UBER):
Because too many people depend on an income as a Taxi driver, we have no UBER on SXM, but Taxi and Taxi vans are available all around. Taxis are not metered on both the Dutch and French side of SXM, but drivers are required to carry a government-issued rate sheet for two-person occupancy. All rates are based on the distance and because we are such a small island it works slightly different then anywhere else.
We advise you to always ask the price in advance and when you are a group negotiate your pricing. Rates might be slightly different between Dutch and French side cabs, but they all service the entire island.
Rental Cars on Sint Maarten | Saint Martin:
By far, the best ad most cost-efficient way to get around on SXM is a Rental car; it allows you to experience and explore St. Maarten | St. Martin all around. There are many agencies available, so renting a car is super easy—the daily rates for a rental start at $30 or €21 with unlimited mileage.
The easiest is to rent a car in advance, and upon arrival at Princess Juliana International Airport, they will pick you up and bring you to the Rental Car facility. You can choose between some large international brands or great local companies, such as AVIS, Budget, Hertz, ACE, Leisure, SAX, Star Lite, and many more…
Public transport in St Maarten | St Martin:
All around SXM, you have small busses driving with a sign in front of the bus mentioning only the end destination. The price will always be between $1 and $3 per person. The best places to hop on or off are Backstreet in Philipsburg, and all the bus stops around Simpson Bay, Maho, and Cole Bay. For Mullet Bay, you step out at main-street, and for Cupecoy, you will have to request the driver. A small tip is always much appreciated.
Dutch side routes:
Route 1 Dutch side: Mullet Bay -> Maho -> Airport Road -> Simpson Bay -> Philipsburg and back
Route 2 Dutch side: Philipsburg -> Cole Bay -> Marigot and back
Route 3 Dutch side: Philipsburg -> Madame Estate -> Dutch Quarter -> French Quarter and back
French side routes:
Route 1 French side: French Quarter -> Orient Bay -> Hope Estate -> Grand Case and back
Route 2 French side: Nettle Bay -> Marigot -> Grand Case and back
We advise to always ask the driver if passes by your designated location before entering the bus and when you need to be in Simpson Bay DO NOT take the one saying Marigot ;)
